Kevin Summers is a distant, isolated person. His father left some time ago, likely because his mother was constantly away on business, and Kevin himself was not a particularly compelling person to be around.

So let it be made clear that Kevin's disposition was a contributing factor to his father's absence, not a result.

He gets average grades, with not much passion for learning or achievement. Though, his fellow students assume he's academically gifted because he has glasses, and is relatively unshaken by most things. Stoicism is often mistaken for wisdom like that.

Once he was mugged by Smokes and Big, he found new purpose for himself, and set out with a vendetta against them. This vendetta led him to become friends with Hunter, more out of a desire to get an upper hand on them than any real desire to be a friend to Hunter. Others notice his lack of compassion for his 'friend,' and it hurts his image in their eyes.

Why is he so jaded, with all the personality of a sharp rock in a small hole? That remains to be seen.
